My Mission Has Changed My Life

Dear Family and Friends,

Wow this is my last letter being a missionary.  Time has truly gone by so fast!!  My mission has meant the world to me and has changed my life.  I am so grateful for this time I have been able to be a representative of Jesus Christ.  The Gospel brings true happiness that money cannot buy.  I have seen how it has changed my life and the life of others.  It is very sad for me to leave the people of Michigan!!   I have gotten to know so many of them and love so many of them.  It is like leaving home all over again :).  It is bitter sweet to leave.

I had an amazing last week of my mission!!!  God is good!!!  District meeting was awesome.  The topic was Christ like attributes and it was amazing.  We all had an attribute to teach on and the spirit was so strong and we all learned so much.  Yesterday at church they called me up to give my testimony, it took me by surprise and wasn't expecting it but it was a great privilege. It was awesome that we had a few more people than last week come to church yesterday.  The coolest thing happened yesterday, one of the ladies in the ward that just got reactivated is the fellowshipper for two of the ladies that came for their first time yesterday. After church yesterday she came up to me and said “Elder Fletcher, thank you so much for finding me two new friends.”  It brought me so much joy hearing that.

I got to go to Charlotte one last time this week and that was very hard to leave!!!  I got to see a few of the members that I love so much.  Celeste who has been like my mom was so hard to say goodbye to.  I can't wait to see all my friends from Michigan again.  Thank you all for all of the support that you have given me out here.  Thanks for following the last two years of my life and helping me grow.

Love,

Departing Testimony and a Full House

Dear Family and Friends,

This has been a great week here in Jackson!!!!  I got to go on tradeoffs with one of the missionaries that I trained last week and it was so much fun. It was funny bring up past memories and catching up.  We both have grown so much since then.

It was so hard this week. I had my last zone conference and I got to give my departing testimony on Friday.  I remember at the start of my mission missionaries would get up and say how they didn't want to go home. I didn't get it until last week.  My mission has meant so much to me and changed my life for the good.  It was funny some missionaries asked me before if I was going to cry and I told them I wasn't planning on it but the unplanned happened.  I cried. :)  It is crazy to think this is my last week on my mission. I am excited to see you all soon.

At church yesterday we had a packed house!!!  We had 7 people that we have been working with come to church for the first time.  I was so excited to see them there.  I taught gospel principle class yesterday which is sad because I truly love teaching Sunday school.  It was amazing we had 20 people in class and it went very well.  I was very pleased.

We have been having a lot of success here and we are so grateful for it.  We have been so busy that we really don't have time to go door knocking, which is the goal.  Well I love you all and miss you all.

Crazy Lady and Yellow Water :)

Dear Family and Fans,

Happy Monday everyone!!!  We had another amazing week her in Jackson.  We had some very fun experiences.  I had probably the craziest experience of my life this Wednesday. We went over to one of our investigator’s house to go help one of them move up stairs.  I was on tradeoffs with a brand new missionary and we knock on the door and one of the ladies answered and said I am so glad to see you.  She gave me a hug and the other lady said she needed to talk to me.  She took me into another room and shut the door.  This is when I started freaking out.  She told me all this things that God told her and things that her dead mom was telling her.  She was going all crazy!  I found out that she is a schizophrenic.  We got out of there as quick as we could if you know what I mean ha-ha.

I taught my earliest appointment this week, it was at 6 am.  It was the only time that he could meet because of his busy schedule so we had to compromises.  I thought I would be trunky at this time only have a few weeks but every time I sit down to relax I get board ha-ha.

We got to attend a baptism on Saturday that the other missionaries here had.  It was way cool; it was a part member family here that missionaries have been working with for 2 years now.  It was kind of funny because the water here isn't the best so when we filled up the baptism font the water was yellow. It will be a baptism that I always remember.  I love and miss you all!!

Lessons Learned from Bible Bashing

Dear Family and Friends,

Another amazing week in Jackson, we had a lot of learning experiences this week.  I was so excited I got to go back again to Charlotte last week and see one of my favorite Families!!!  It was so good to see them again.  I got to see Deanna, the girl that got baptized when I was there.  I actually get to go back to Charlotte again tonight.

We are working with some less actives that are so close to coming back to church.  One of the good learning experiences that we had this week was we were walking back from one of our apt. and there was someone walking down the other way.  I offered him a pass-along card and he decided that he wanted to bash with us. He was very smart and knew his bible.  It shook up my comp and we had a good experience reading together Alma 26:27-30.  It was cool at the start of my mission we got bashed way hard one day and I was done and my trainer said we needed to get out our scriptures. We turned to a random page and just started reading and that is what we read it was a very cool experience.

I love you all and will talk to you again next week.

Schooled by an 18 Year Old

Dear Family and Friends

Another amazing week in Jackson!!!  We are having many miracles here and really enjoying it here. I had a lot of fun this week on tradeoffs.  The 18 year old missionary is a champ; he would have put me to shame when I was 18.  He is really good at solving a Rubik cube.  He was trying to teach me how to solve it faster and I was just not getting it.  It was so funny ha-ha. We have been trying to get to know the ward a lot more and we are having great success with it.  I think I know the names of half the members.

We have had a lot of opportunities to teach again this week and keeping very busy.  We started teaching a part member family that the kids haven't been baptized and it is really fun teaching kids.  They just soak up everything and you get to have fun with them.  It is great.  We are hoping to get them to church in the upcoming week.  Oh one cool experience we had this week was we were out door knocking and on a lady door step we taught the restoration.  When we got do with the first vision she said that is the most beautiful story she has ever heard.  We are meeting with her again on Wednesday.  I can't wait, she is so prepared.  I love you all and look forward to seeing you all soon.

Look Alike Companion

Dear Family and Friends!!!

This week I picked up Elder Kofoed and dropped off Elder Campbell.  Elder Kofoed is from American Fork and is pretty cool.  It has been pretty funny while we have been door knocking a couple people asked us if we are brothers because they think we look alike.  I don't think we look that much alike; we are just both short and have the same color hair. People think it is funny when we tell them that we only have known each other for just a couple of day’s ha-ha.

We have had a lot of success this week and have a lot of fun.  It was so hot the first part of the week and I was so glad that our apt. has central air!!!!  We got to meet with the lady that is in her 80s again this week and she is amazing!!!  She invited us to help out at a food pantry at the church that she has been attending.  I have never been to a church like that before.  It was a mega church; it had a coffee shop and a small story.  It was very interesting to see.

I am excited today I get to go on a trade off today with a missionary in my district that is 18.  He was teasing me about how old I am the other night when we were on the phone.  He just graduated from high school last month.  Thank you so much for all of the letters and the support.  I love you and miss you all!!!

The Power of the Book of Mormon

Elder Fletcher and his companion sporting their superman attaire!
Dear Family and Friends,

This Week has gone by so fast.  We had a lot of things to do this week and had lots of success.  We got to teach more lessons this week than I have ever had on my mission; it was great.  We really didn't have time to go door knocking because we had so many appointments.  We taught an 82 yr. old lady that we were able answered all of her questions with the book of Mormon!!!!  Then we got to teach another family that we answered all of their questions using the book of Mormon.  This week has really been a testimony builder of the book of Mormon.  Almost every question that we were asked we got to answer it using the book of Mormon.  It really has helped me see what a blessing it is to have in our life and how grateful I am that I was introduced to it in my child hood instead of having to wait to find in later in life.

So many people have asked me when I am coming home so everyone knows I will be coming home August 28th.  I will be picking up my new comp today and it is very weird to think that he is my last comp.  Jackson is doing really well and excited to see what happens my last transfer.  I am so excited because one of the missionaries that I trained is going to be in the other area of Jackson and I will get to see him all the time.  I love you all and thanks for all the Birthday wishes again.

Happy 4th of July!

Dear Family and Friends,

I hope you all had a great 4th of July last week.  We had a really good 4th of July!!!! On the 3rd is when they had the fireworks here and they were really good.  It was awesome we got to stay out till 11 both nights ha-ha.  It was so funny it felt like it was so late and it was only 11.  On the 4th we had a ward breakfast and played games after ward, it was really fun.  We played volleyball for about 2 hours and it was awesome.  It was a short net so it was just my size ha-ha.

I got to go to Charlotte again this week and it was so great!!!  I love Charlotte and miss it a lot.  I got to visit with so more of the members that I loved while I was there.  I got two referrals from the members in Charlotte for the Jackson area.  They were really great people.  We got to meet them on Friday and Saturday.  One of the referrals we got I met on tradeoffs last October she is awesome. I love you all and miss you all!!  Thanks for all the birthday wishes

Different and Hard

Dear Family and Friends,

Well this week was a little different and hard. Last Monday I found out that I lost my grandpa and I went on tradeoffs to one of my last areas.  We were going to go see one of my favorite members there that wasn't doing very well and I found out that night he had passed away.  It was hard but I was able to go to his viewing.  I found out from the missionaries that are there now that the last picture he took was of me and him.  That really touched my heart.  The second picture is of me and Brother Andersen.

The week went by so fast!!  Tuesday I was in Charlotte and then Wednesday I was in Jonesville.  One it was so cool I got to give a baptismal interview on Wednesday to a lady that was 77 and she has wanted to get baptized since she was 9!!!  She said the last two times she tried to get baptized the pastor died so she was worried that she would never get to be baptized.
Yesterday we got James to church and he really enjoyed it!!!  It has been great to see how James is progressing and changing.

Well I love you all and talk to you next week!!  Have a happy 4th of July!!!

Amazing Leadership Training

Dear Family and Friends,

Well another week in Jackson has gone by.  We have two investigators that are progressing really well and have baptism dates. We are having a hard time getting them to church but hopefully we can fix that.

On Tuesday I got to go to Lansing with one of the missionaries I came out with.  It was good to catch up on our missions and serve a day together.

Yesterday we had the General Leadership training and it was amazing!!! It was all focused on missionary work and how we can move the work forward.  We are hoping that we can apply what we learned to the ward we are serving in.  Sorry for such a short email but some things came up today.  I love you all and miss you all.

Success in Finding

Dear Family and Friends!!!

Well this week went by supper quick this week, I had two tradeoffs and was only with my comp for 4 days.  Being in a big city is a lot faster pace than a small town.  We are constantly busy and don't have time to take breaks for dinner.  Last week, we had tons of success finding.  About ever third person we talked to, we talked to for at least 20 min so that was way cool.  One of the ladies we talked to was awesome!! She asked us why we would need another book and that is one of my favorite questions!!!  We opened up the Book of Mormon right on her door step and started to teach her.    She said she was really impressed with my knowledge of the scriptures and wants me to come to a bible study at her church to teach them.  I don't know how well that would go but it was a good compliment.

It was crazy we got stuck in the middle of some family drama here, it sucked.  There is a recent convert here that has a sister that we are teaching and they don't get along.  They were fighting last week and were telling lies about what we said about the other.  So we told them yesterday that we had to step out between them for a little bit until things calm down.
Well that is about it for the week I love you all!!  Thanks again for all your emails and support!

New Area: Jackson, MI

Dear Family and Friends,

Well I am in Jackson now; it was so hard to leave South Haven!!!!  It was like leaving home all over again.  Well my new comp is Elder Campbell and he has been out for 3 months now.  He was pretty stressed out his first day but he is doing well now.  I forgot what it was like to be in a big city!!!  I am so excited; today I am going to the mall ha-ha.  The ward is pretty big here, I was in shock yesterday.  I went from a branch of 40 to a ward of 150.  I forgot what that was like.  The work in a city is a lot faster passed, there are so many people to talk to that you always have something to do.  Well so far the only complaint that I have about Jackson is that we don't get fed here. J That is one thing that I am hoping to change.

I had a cool experience last week.  We got a referral from a member and when I got there I remembered that I knocked on that door before and talked to that lady.  I went up and started to talk to her again and she remembered who I was because Fletcher is her maiden name.  We started to talk about family and she really wants to get started with Family History.  I am way excited we are going back tomorrow to get her started and see if we are related somehow ha-ha.  Well I am running out of time on the computer so I will talk to you all next week!

Transfer Day is Here Again!

Dear Family and Friends,

Well another great and last week in South Haven!!!!  We got our transfer calls and I will be leaving tomorrow for Jackson.  It is going to be sad to leave.  I am leaving home all over again.  The members here are awesome and I am really going to miss them.  I told everyone if I am ever rich that I am going to buy a summer home here.  I don't know if that will ever happen but I do want to come back.  I am going to miss being so close to the water.  I have never lived anywhere so close to a lake before it was really nice to experience that feel.

This week on Wednesday was not fun.  After district meeting we went to Taco Bell and it gave me food poisoning!!  That was not fun at all.  I was on splits that day and I felt so bad that we had to cancel all of our apt.  I don't know how long it will take before I go back to Taco Bell again ha-ha.

Since Friday on we just went and visited people and said good bye to them.  Here are some of the pictures.  Oh I forgot how much I hate packing!!!!  Hopefully it is my last time packing before I go home.  Well I love you all and I will tell you next week about how Jackson is and my new comp, Elder Campbell.

Mission P-Day, Biking and Walking = A Sore Missionary :)

Dear Family and Friends!!

This week was on of the funniest weeks I have had in a long time.  I was on splits in one of the other areas in my district and they didn't have a car.  I have gotten so lazy because I have had a full time car most of my mission and that made Tuesday rough.  I walked 10 miles and I thought I was going to die ha-ha.

Wednesday was so much fun!!!  We had our half mission P-Day and just got to have fun and play sports. It was crazy because the weather wasn't the best, it rained the whole time!!!  Football in the rain was so much fun though.  The amazing thing was no one got hurt ha-ha.  It was sweet we did other activities and one of them was a balloon toss.  Elder Felix and I got second and overall our district took second overall.  I was so sore!!!  I use to tease people like me that would get sore after one day of playing sports.  Now that is me ha-ha.

So last week we had to take our car into the shop to get it fixed because some other missionaries backed into something so we got the opportunity to ride bikes.  I forgot how fun it is to ride a bike, it is awesome.  You get more opportunities to talk to different people that are on the sidewalks that you wouldn't if you were in a car.

This week we had a way awesome lesson with one of our investigators that are going through a rough time.  She was telling us all that was going on in her life. It was awesome we talked to her how the Book of Mormon is the answer to all her problems and the spirit was so strong.  Every time we leave she is so thankful that we came because she can feel the spirit when we are there. Oh I almost forgot, we have transfer calls this Friday so I think I will be getting the boot.  So I will let you all know next week where I will be and hopefully my new address.  Love you all!!!!

Beautiful South Haven

Dear Family and Friends!!

Well another week in beautifully South Haven!!!  The weather has really gotten nice and the town is starting to light up.  It was pretty fun on Saturday; we just personal contacted down town and got to talk to some cool people.  This week I got to stay in South Haven for the full week so that was nice to be at home for the full week.  I went on splits with an Elder that doesn't talk at all.  I tried to break him out of his shell a little bit but I failed; maybe better luck next time.

One cool thing this week that I learned was when we were teaching one of our investigators.  They are going through a really hard time believing how much the gospel really blesses your life.  The scripture in D&C 82:10 just kept coming to mind about how God will bless us if we remember him.  The Gospel is such a blessing. It was awesome!

We have had a lot of opportunities to do service here.  On Thursday we got to help one of the members that is remodeling his house almost all day.  I forgot how much I like that kind of stuff.  I was just as happy as could be ha-ha.  This week is going to be awesome, because we are having our mission p-day on Wednesday.  It is sweet we have it once a year and we just have activities for most of the day.  I am way excited.  Well I love you all and thanks for all of your emails.

Last Mother's Day Call and Good Ole' Missionary Work

Dear Family and Friends!!!

Well I hope you all had a great Mother’s Day!!!  It was so great to talk to my family!!  It was crazy to think that it was my last phone call home being a missionary.  I had another great week!!  It was crazy so I actually got to go see my cousin this week, Amber and Chad.  They live in one of the other branches in my district.  It was funny, I was on splits there and I called up Amber and asked if I could come by and she offered us dinner. Double score; I got to meet my cousin and her family plus we got dinner.  It was good to see all of her kids.  That was the first time that I have met them before.

We picked up a way cool new investigator this week.  We had an apt with another investigator and she said to come back in 15 min and when we returned she was gone so we decided to go door knocking and it was the second door we knocked on, another miracle that God gave us.  His name is Anthony and he is a Christian Rapper, he shared with us a couple of his sounds it was way sweet.  Well not to much more is new this week.  Love you all I will talk to you all next week.

Mission Humor

Dear Family and Friends!!!

Well anther great week in Michigan!!  It really has started to warm up here and it is so pretty here, I love it so much.  Everyday Elder Felix and I have been running to the beach and it is so awesome!! I feel like I am on vacation, well until I put my shirt and tie on and then I remember that I’m not ha-ha.

This week was a busy week, I was on splits from Monday till Thursday night so I didn't get to be with Elder Felix much this week, but everything went well.  One cool miracle that we had this week was that we were knocking a lot of apartments.  We had another appointment to get to but we had two doors left.  We decided to knock them anyways and the second to last door we got in and taught the Restoration to and the girl was way awesome.  We had to run to are next appointment because were late and that lesson went well.  After that Appointment we had 15 min till our next place so we thought we would go get that last door.  It turned out that we went to the wrong apartment complex that was right next to it, but the door we did knock on is letting us come back this week.  God Worked through me by getting mixed up with my numbers ha-ha.

On Wednesday we had Zone Conference and it was pretty funny, for the missionaries that are going home they get to give a departing testimony and my mission president called me up.  So I had to get up in front of the Whole zone and talk to my mission president and had to tell him that I wasn't going home till August.  It was pretty funny. Well I can't wait till Mother’s day to call my family.  Just to let my family know I will be calling at 4:15 Utah time.  Love you all and talk to you soon.

Elder Robson Fletcher

Genesis' Baptism

Dear Family and Friends!!!

We had a very successful week this week!!!!  Genesis was baptized on Saturday and it was awesome!!!  It was also kind of stressful as well but worth it.  A couple weeks back I told Genesis after she committed to baptism that Satan would try to stop her and he sure did.  This is just some of the things that happened: her husband’s boss at work told him that he was going to have to work on Saturday and it was mandatory.  He said that he has never had to work a Saturday before. He had to talk to his boss to get the day off.  Then the day of the baptism they planned to go get one of their friends and the other would get their other friend.  An hour before the baptism one of their cars wouldn't start. They had to rush to go get everyone and they didn't show up until the baptism was supposed to start.  The good news was that the water was warm this time!!!  I didn't mess up on that part again ha-ha.  It was so amazing to see Genesis in the font with her husband!  They have come such a long ways and they are so happy.  It is so great to see the change they have made in their lives and how they have helped me out.  I got to give the talk on the Holy Ghost and the spirit was there so strong it was hard for me not to cry.  The highlight of the baptism was when Shay their two year old daughter Sang the closing Hymn I am A Child of God at the top of her voice.  It was so cute!!  Everyone one was smiling.  I know this work to be true and because the change that it makes in your life!!!!  I love and miss all of you!!!

Fun in the Rain

Dear Family and Friends,

We had another great week this week and we are really looking forward to this week.  This week we picked up a new investigator named Elaine and she is way awesome.  She is getting a master’s degree right now and can't find a job. At random I told her as we keep the commandments God blesses us for it.  She told us this week that she had been thinking of that comment and wanted to know what else she needed to do.  It is awesome to see the spirit touch people hearts.

We are way excited for Genesis’ baptism this Saturday. This week was way cool. Genesis’ Husband was made a Priest and is now going to be able to baptize Genesis.  They have come so far in the last 3 months; it is awesome.  They are way excited to be sealed in a year.  This week was kind of crazy because Genesis had a lot of questions about the kingdoms of glory.  I had to study it a lot to answer her questions.  The good thing is now that I know a lot about the kingdoms of glory that I didn't know before.  The great thing about being a missionary and teaching people is that they have questions that you normally wouldn't think of.  Then you have to go study their question so you can find out first.

We had a way fun Saturday last week!!! On Thursday we had district meeting and after we had a bbq at our apt with the rest of the district.  Right when we put the meat on it started raining like crazy.  I have never seen rain like that before.  I had an umbrella but it wasn't big enough for both me and the grill.  So I got way wet ha-ha.   We also helped one of the ladies in the branch squeegee out her basement because it flooded.  I have never seen so much rain.

We had two birthday parties that we got to go which was way fun.  One of the party's we had a cake fight and we got chased around the yard for about 20 min before they got us.  But we did put up a good fight ha-ha.  Well that is all for this week.  I love you all and miss you.  Till next week.

Funny Experiences on the Mission :)

Dear Family and Friends

On Tuesday I got to go to another area in my district and it was pretty funny.  In Paw Paw we went to a lady that they had a return appointment with and we were there for 2 hours and the lady was crazy!!!!!  I really don't know how to describe her but for some reason she really liked me.  She gave me a bunch of advice and told me about my future.  It was pretty funny.  One funny thing that she told me was that I am not doing what my purpose is in life.  That I am climbing to the top of a building like a CEO does but when I get to the top that I will find out that I am going up the wrong building haha.  The good thing was that she told me I have a lot of potential haha.  After we got out, the missionary I was with just started laughing.  You have to love experiences like that!

Genesis is still doing awesome and still on track for the 27th and she got the day off of work!!!  We had a great lesson with her this week and talked about the nature of the God Head.  It was pretty funny she was in Mosiah 15 and she told us that was the best description of the Trinity that she has ever heard of.  It is a good thing for the restoration of the gospel or I would be confused about that one too.  It was cool to see how her testimony of Joseph Smith helped her realize who God is.

We had a cool experience while finding this week.  On Thursday Elder Felix and I were out finding and we starting talking to a guy named Justin that said he was agnostic.  We asked him if something happened to him in his life that he really didn’t' believe in god.  He told us that he has been to a lot of churches and they couldn't answer any of his questions.  We talked to him for about an hour answering his questions through the Book of Mormon and taught the plan of salvation.  It was amazing experience to talk to him.  Every day it just amazes me how much we need the Book of Mormon and how blessed we are to have it.  Well until next week, I love you all and Miss you!!!

Great Conference Weekend!

Dear Family and Friends

What a great weekend!!!  I love general conference, when I was younger I never thought I would say that but I can now haha.  It was great to talk with some of our investigators after conference and what they thought of it.  All of them said they liked it so that is a good thing. It made me realize how blessed I was to grow up watching general conference.  One of them is in his 60's and that was his first time hearing from a prophet of God.  That really made my testimony stronger that this is the true church and we do have a prophet.  Oh my favorite talk was Elder Perry's yesterday on obedience and how the world only follows 4 of the 10 commandments.  It is so true how obedience to the commandments set you free and makes you happier.  It is sad to see people here that are having a rough life but not wanting to listen to us because what we share is what will bless them.

Genesis is so close to baptism it is great!!!  On Thursday we set a date for her for the 27th of this month and she is way excited.  Genesis this past week she was praying to know if this is what God wanted her to do.  She prayed for a sign and she got in her car and it wouldn't start and she got mad as anyone would, she took time to pray and the car just started after she said amen.  Then she felt the Holy Ghost and it came to her mind that was her answer.  God is a God of Miracles!!!  I love you all and miss you!!!

Happy Easter!

Dear Family and Friends

Happy Easter and happy April fools.  We had an awesome Miracle this week that has made my week.  So Genesis, one of our investigators that is a part member family, committed to baptism.  It has been rough trying to commit her to baptism.  I have invited her 3 times to be baptized and every time she has told me no. She said that she wasn't ready yet.  We had an amazing lesson with her on Wednesday.  So Last week my sister Anna was impressed to write her and send her testimony to her.  We gave it to her.  That inspired my comp and I to have a testimony meeting with her and her family.  Her husband bore a powerful testimony and we were all crying.  Genesis testified that she knew she needed to be baptized.  At the end we invited her again and again she said NO!!!  We walked out of that lesson pretty discouraged.  We prayed together after asking that the spirit would touch her heart because we had done all that we could do and we didn't know what else to do.  An hour later we got a phone call from her and she said that she got her answer and she wanted to be baptized.  It was such a miracle because we both knew it wasn't us that it was with God’s help.

The talk that I just sent was a story that my comp read for his talk yesterday for Easter and everyone really enjoyed it.  My talk went very well.  I spoke for 25 mins.  I never thought I would be able to talk that long.  I really enjoyed the opportunity to speak on Easter.  It really put me in the Easter mood haha.  It strengthened my testimony that Jesus Christ loves us so much and that he LIVES!!!  I love you all!!!  Until next week

Love,

An Easter Story We Can All Understand

Author unknown

There was a certain Professor of Religion named Dr. Christensen, a studious man who taught at a small college in the western United States.  Dr. Cristensen taught the required survey course in Christianity at this particular Institution.  Every student was required to take this course his freshman year, regardless of his or her major.

Although Dr. Christensen tried hard to communicate the essence of the gospel in his class, he found that most of his students looked upon the course as nothing but required drudgery.  Despite his best efforts, most students refused to take Christianity seriously.

This year, Dr. Christensen had a special student named Steve.  Steve was only a freshman, but was studying with the intent of going onto seminary for the ministry. Steve was popular, he was well liked, and he was an imposing physical specimen. He was now the starting center on the school football team, and was the best student in the professor's class.

One day, Dr. Christensen asked Steve to stay after class so he could talk with him. 'How many push-ups can you do?'

Steve said, 'I do about 200 every night.'  200? That's pretty good, Steve,' Dr. Christensen said. 'Do you think you could do 300?'

Steve replied, 'I don't know.... I've never done 300 at a time.'

'Do you think you could?' again asked Dr. Christensen.

'Well, I can try,' said Steve.

'Can you do 300 in sets of 10? I have a class project in mind and I need you to do about 300 push-ups in sets of ten for this to work. Can you do
it?  I need you to tell me you can do it,' said the professor.

Steve said, 'Well... I think I can...yeah, I can do it.'

Dr. Christensen said, 'Good! I need you to do this on Friday. Let me explain what I have in mind.'

Friday came and Steve got to class early and sat in the front of the room. When class started, the professor pulled out a big box of donuts.  No, these weren't the normal kinds of donuts, they were the BIG, extra fancy kind, with cream centers and frosting swirls.

Everyone was pretty excited it was Friday, the last class of the year, and they were going to get an early start on the weekend with a party in Dr.
Christensen's class.

Dr. Christensen went to the first girl in the first row and asked, "Cynthia, do you want to have one of these donuts?"
Cynthia said, 'Yes.'

Dr. Christensen then turned to Steve and asked, 'Steve, would you do ten push-ups so that Cynthia can have a donut?'  'Sure.'  Steve jumped down from his desk to do a quick ten.  Then Steve again sat in his desk.  Dr. Christensen put a donut on Cynthia's desk.

Dr. Christensen then went to Joe, the next person, and asked, 'Joe, do you want a donut?'  Joe said, 'Yes.' Dr. Christensen asked, 'Steve would you do ten push-ups so Joe can have a donut?'

Steve did ten push-ups, Joe got a donut. And so it went, down the first aisle, Steve did ten push-ups for every person before they got their donut.

Walking down the second aisle, Dr. Christensen came to Scott.  Scott was on the basketball team, and in as good condition as Steve.  He was very popular and never lacking for female companionship.   When the professor asked, 'Scott, do you want a donut?' Scott's reply was, 'Well, can I do my own push-ups?'

Dr. Christensen said, 'No, Steve has to do them.' Then Scott said, 'Well, I don't want one then.'

Dr. Christensen shrugged and then turned to Steve and asked, 'Steve, would you do ten push-ups so Scott can have a donut he doesn't want?' With perfect obedience Steve started to do ten push-ups.  Scott said, 'HEY! I said I didn't want one!'

Dr. Christensen said, 'Look! This is my classroom, my class, my desks, and these are my donuts.  Just leave it on the desk if you don't want it.' And he put a donut on Scott's desk.

Now by this time, Steve had begun to slow down a little. He just stayed on the floor between sets because it took too much effort to be getting up and down . You could start to see a little perspiration coming out around his brow.

Dr. Christensen started down the third row. Now the students were beginning to get a little angry. Dr.  Christensen asked Jenny, 'Jenny, do you want a donut?' Sternly, Jenny said, 'No.' Then Dr. Christensen asked Steve, 'Steve, would you do ten more push-ups so Jenny can have a donut that she doesn't want?'   Steve did ten....Jenny got a donut.

By now, a growing sense of uneasiness filled the room. The students were beginning to say 'No' and there were all these uneaten donuts on the desks.

Steve also had to really put forth a lot of extra effort to get these push-ups done for each donut. There began to be a small pool of sweat on the floor beneath his face, his arms and brow were beginning to get red because of the physical effort involved.

Dr. Christensen asked Robert, who was the most vocal unbeliever in the class, to watch Steve do each push up to make sure he did the full ten push-ups in a set because he couldn't bear to watch all of Steve's work for all of those uneaten donuts.  He sent Robert over to where Steve was so Robert could count the set and watch Steve closely.

Dr. Christensen started down the fourth row.  During his class, however, some students from other classes had wandered in and sat down on the steps along the radiators that ran down the sides of the room.  When the professor realized this, he did a quick count and saw that now there were 34 students in the room.  He started to worry if Steve would be able to make it.

Dr. Christensen went on to the next person and the next and the next.  Near the end of that row, Steve was really having a rough time. He was taking a lot more time to complete each set.  Steve asked Dr. Christensen, 'Do I have to make my nose touch on each one?'

Dr. Christensen thought for a moment, 'Well, they're your push-ups.  You are in charge now. You can do them any way that you want.' And Dr. Christensen went on.

A few moments later, Jason, a recent transfer student, came to the room and was about to come in when all the students yelled in one voice, 'NO!  Don't come in! Stay out!'

Jason didn't know what was going on. Steve picked up his head and said, 'No, let him come.'

Professor Christensen said, 'You realize that if Jason comes in you will have to do ten push-ups for him?' Steve said, 'Yes, let him come in. Give him a donut.'

Dr. Christensen said, 'Okay, Steve, I'll let you get Jason's out of the way right now. Jason, do you want a donut?' Jason, new to the room, hardly knew what was going on.

'Yes,' he said, 'give me a donut.'  Steve, will you do ten push-ups so that Jason can have a donut?' Steve did ten push-ups very slowly and with great effort.

Jason, bewildered, was handed a donut and sat down.

Dr. Christensen finished the fourth row, and then started on those visitors seated by the heaters. Steve's arms were now shaking with each push-up in a struggle to lift himself against the force of gravity.  By this time sweat was profusely dropping off of his face, there was no sound except his heavy breathing; there was not a dry eye in the room.

The very last two students in the room were two young women, both cheerleaders, and very popular. Dr.  Christensen went to Linda, the second to last, and asked, 'Linda, do you want a donut?' Linda said, very sadly, 'No, thank you.' Professor Christensen quietly asked, 'Steve, would you do ten push-ups so that Linda can have a donut she doesn't want?' Grunting from the effort, Steve did ten very slow push-ups for Linda.

Then Dr Christensen turned to the last girl, Susan. 'Susan, do you want a donut?' Susan, with tears flowing down her face, began to cry. 'Dr. Christensen, why can't I help him?'

Dr. Christensen, with tears of his own, said, 'No, Steve has to do it alone. I have given him this task, and he is in charge of seeing that everyone has an opportunity for a donut whether they want it or not. When I decided to have a party this last day of class, I looked at my grade book.
Steve here is the only student with a perfect grade.  Everyone else has failed a test, skipped class, or offered me inferior work.  Steve told me that in football practice, when a player messes up he must do push-ups.   I told Steve that none of you could come to my party unless he paid the price by doing your push-ups.  He and I made a deal for your sakes.'

'Steve, would you do ten push-ups so Susan can have a donut?'  As Steve very slowly finished his last push-up, with the understanding that he had accomplished all that was required of him, having done 350 push-ups, his arms buckled beneath him and he fell to the floor.

Dr. Christensen turned to the room and said.  'And so it was, that our Savior, Jesus Christ, on the cross, pleaded to the Father, 'Into Thy hands I commend My spirit.'  With the understanding that He had done everything that was required of Him, He yielded up His life. And like some of those in this room, many of us leave the gift on the desk, uneaten.'

Two students helped Steve up off the floor and to a seat. He was physically exhausted, but wearing a thin smile.

'Well done, good and faithful servant,' said the professor, adding 'Not all sermons are preached in words.'

Turning to his class, the professor said, 'My wish is that you might understand and fully comprehend all the riches of grace and mercy that have been given to you through the sacrifice of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

He spared not His only Begotten Son, but gave Him up for us all, for the whole Church, now and forever.  Whether or not we choose to accept His gift to us, the price has been paid.  Wouldn't you be foolish and ungrateful to leave it lying on the desk?'
